Memory lane

I found myself back in Eau Claire, Wisconsin last weekend to witness my brother-in-law's tragic defeat as the coach of the 13-year-old Babe Ruth All-Stars. You'll get 'em next year Pedro...

But after the game we drove through town to see how the old girl was fairing. I went to High School and College in Eau Claire - but that was several years ago. How many years will remain unspoken.

We drove down Water Street - the lane of decadence during those college years - and there she stood, my first love.

Well, better said, the bar I first fell in love with. The first bar that taught me that hanging out and talking over a pint of suds was a proper use of a bar. Until then, bars were to chase girls and get all sweaty to over-modulated dance tunes. That bar would be The Joynt.
She's still standing as the first picture testifies. The Joynt is on the left next to the sub shop - which I don't recall being there all those years ago. But like I said, we won't talk about how many years ago because that might make me feel old. But if the Joynt can still be turning out the beers all these years maybe I have a chance to make it a few more years too.
